What Is Tokyo Idol Festival? Japan's Biggest Idol Festival, Explained by Marine

日本最大級のアイドルフェス「TOKYO IDOL FESTIVAL」、2026年は7月31日から開催

Article

"Tokyo Idol Festival," known to fans as TIF, is one of Japan's biggest idol music festivals — and for many international visitors, it's their first look at this side of Japan's pop culture in person. It began in Shinagawa in 2010, moved to Odaiba the following year, and returns for its 16th edition July 31–August 2, 2026, filling the Odaiba and Aomi waterfront with more than 200 idol groups performing in rotation across indoor and outdoor stages over three days. A 3-day pass runs 30,000 yen, and single-day tickets are 11,500 yen (general-sale pricing).

What To Know

A festival like TIF feels completely different from watching a single group's concert. Instead of following one act all day, you move between stages and can just as easily discover a new favorite group as catch one you already love. Sixteen years in, and billed as one of the world's largest idol events, TIF has become something fans compare notes about for years afterward — not just a single weekend.

Because TIF runs across several stages at once, half the fun is simply deciding where to go next — the official site posts the full stage timetable closer to the event, so it's worth checking before you build a plan. Zepp DiverCity is the one indoor stage; everything else is outdoors, so if you're visiting in Tokyo's August heat, water, a hat, and sun protection matter more than first-timers usually expect. TIF also includes tokutenkai — brief meet-and-greet moments with performers, sometimes with a cheki (instant-film) photo to take home — one of the more distinctly Japanese parts of idol culture, and unlike anything in most Western festival formats.

What Fans Are Saying

  • "200+ groups across three days? That's a lot of ground to cover."
  • "I like that it's spread across multiple stages, not just one setlist."
  • "16 years running is honestly impressive for a festival this size."

Original Japanese

  • 「3日間で200組以上はすごい規模」
  • 「ステージが複数あるの、見応えありそう」
