More Than 45 World Cities Meet in Tokyo to Ask What Culture Can Do for the Future

「世界都市文化サミット2026東京」45以上の都市が集い文化の未来を議論

Article

More than 45 world cities are meeting in Tokyo from October 28 through 30, 2026, for the World Cities Culture Summit — a closed professional gathering asking whether culture can function as infrastructure for the cities of the future.

A Global Network, Now in Tokyo

The summit is hosted jointly by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government and the World Cities Culture Forum (WCCF), an organization founded in connection with the 2012 London Olympics that now counts more than 45 participating cities. Tokyo's hosting follows 14 previous summits held in cities around the world, according to the Tokyo Metropolitan Government's own announcement. Venues include the Edo-Tokyo Museum, Tokyo International Forum, WITH HARAJUKU, and other program locations.

Tokyo's Governor participates in the opening ceremony, with domestic and international cultural-policy leaders and experts taking part in sessions discussing culture's relationship to urban challenges, sustainable development, and city-to-city networks.

Not a Public Event

This summit is explicitly not open to the general public, and venue press coverage is not being accepted — the Tokyo Metropolitan Government states that results will be announced after the summit concludes. The program does include exposure to Tokyo culture for participants, such as visits to the Edo-Tokyo Museum and TOKYO ATLAS, but this is for summit delegates, not a public visitor program.

What To Know

This directly reflects TBM's own TOKYO × WORLD CITIES direction: major cities increasingly treat culture not just as entertainment but as part of urban policy and international exchange — a closed professional summit like this is where that thinking actually gets worked out between city governments and cultural-policy experts, even if the public can't attend.

The World Cities Culture Forum (WCCF), founded in connection with the 2012 London Olympics, has grown into a network of more than 45 participating cities and has held 14 prior summits globally — Tokyo hosting the 15th reflects the city's own growing emphasis on culture as part of its international urban identity, alongside its own Tokyo Governor's participation in the opening ceremony.

What Fans Are Saying
