Article
Asakusa Culture & Lights 2026 brings projection mapping to Sensoji Temple's Main Hall and Hozomon Gate from October 30 through November 3, 2026 — a free, after-dark way to experience one of Tokyo's most historic sites through contemporary digital expression.
Free Projection Mapping, No Reservation Needed
Running 18:00–21:30 daily, the free projection mapping covers the Sensoji Main Hall and the south side of Hozomon Gate, with no advance application required. The visual content draws on Asakusa and Sensoji's own history and visual culture, paired with modern digital presentation.
This free portion is the core public-facing part of the event — but it is not the entire program.
A Separately-Ticketed Garden Experience
Denboin Garden and Ema-do special viewing is priced separately: adults/high-school age and above pay ¥2,300 in advance or ¥2,500 at the door; junior-high students pay ¥800 in advance or ¥1,000 at the door; preschool children are free. This ticketed program includes the garden/Ema-do special viewing itself, an artificial sea-of-clouds presentation, evening illumination, and short original dance performances.
Visitors should be clear on this split: the headline projection mapping is free and open to anyone who shows up, while the deeper garden experience is a separate, paid add-on.

What To Know
This pairs one of Tokyo's most historic religious sites with contemporary digital visual expression — the free projection mapping alone is a striking way to experience Sensoji after dark, while the separately-ticketed garden program (with an artificial sea-of-clouds presentation and short dance performances) offers a deeper, paid experience for those who want more.
Sensoji, one of Tokyo's oldest and most significant Buddhist temples, draws on its own history and visual culture as the thematic material for the projection mapping — organizer materials emphasize the temple's historical importance alongside the modern digital medium, but the projected imagery itself should not be mistaken for the temple's permanent physical heritage objects.
