What Is Hikkawase? The Face-to-Face Float Showdown at the Heart of Kawagoe Festival

「曳っかわせ」とは? 川越まつりの山車がぶつかり合う伝統

Article

If you only watch Kawagoe Festival during the day, you're missing its signature moment.

Two Floats, One Standoff

Hikkawase happens when two festival floats meet in the street and turn to directly face each other. The hayashi groups riding each float - musicians on flute and drums, plus a masked dancer - compete to outplay the other side, sometimes for an extended standoff, while the surrounding crowd eggs them on.

Why It Happens at Night

Hikkawase is most dramatic during Yoiyama, the evening portion of the festival when floats are lit by lanterns rather than daylight. The combination of torchlight, close-quarters music, and a packed street is what gives the scene its intensity.

Part of a Living Tradition

The floats used in hikkawase aren't festival props built fresh each year - many are long-maintained neighborhood floats passed down across generations, which is part of why Kawagoe Festival holds national recognition as an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property.

What To Know

Hikkawase is the kind of live, unscripted cultural moment that's hard to capture in a photo or video - the actual experience of standing between two competing floats, surrounded by music and crowd energy, is a big part of why people travel specifically for the festival's nighttime hours rather than just the daytime parade.

The floats involved in hikkawase are often decades or generations old, maintained by specific neighborhoods as genuine cultural property - which is part of why Kawagoe Festival as a whole carries a national Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property designation.
