How Anime Conventions Are Growing Across Europe This Autumn

Article

Four countries, one October: Europe's anime convention calendar has never looked this packed.

Four Cities, Four Kinds of Events

Autumn MondoCon in Budapest centers on anime concerts and gaming; AnimeCon Dublin brings in English-dub voice actor guests; Japan Fest Northampton blends traditional Japanese culture - taiko, kendo, Noh - with food and craft activities; and MCM London treats anime as one strand within a much broader pop-culture convention.

What the Overlap Signals

These events aren't coordinated with each other, but their overlap in the same month, across four different countries, reflects just how widely anime and Japanese-culture fandom has taken root across Europe - no longer concentrated in one or two flagship cities.

What To Know

For fans trying to plan a season of conventions, seeing this many major events cluster into a single month across different countries is genuinely useful context - and for anyone newer to the scene, it's a clear sign that Europe's anime convention culture has moved well beyond a handful of flagship cities.

Each of these events reflects a different relationship with Japanese culture - MondoCon and AnimeCon Dublin center on anime fandom directly, Japan Fest Northampton centers on broader traditional and pop culture together, and MCM London treats anime as one part of a much larger general convention - together showing there's no single template for how European cities engage with it.
