Tokyo’s Mugi Fes Celebrates Japan’s New Wheat With Bread, Ramen, Pizza and Sweets

国産“新麦”を味わう「麦フェス2026」、池尻大橋に過去最多33店舗

Article

Japan's food identity usually starts with rice. Mugi Fes is a reminder that freshly harvested wheat has its own seasonal moment too.

When and Where

Mugi Fes 2026 runs 11:00-18:00 on September 27, 2026, at HOME/WORK VILLAGE, 2-4-5 Ikejiri, Setagaya, Tokyo. Admission is free, and a dedicated new-wheat bread market runs 12:00-17:00 within the same window.

What “Shinmugi” Means

The festival celebrates 新麦 (shinmugi) — freshly harvested, freshly milled domestic Japanese wheat. Rather than treating wheat as a generic imported ingredient, the event frames it the way Japan often frames rice: as something with its own harvest season worth celebrating.

A Record Turnout of Stores

A record 33 participating stores take part in this year's edition, serving bread, ramen, pizza, and sweets all built around shinmugi. Held since 2015, 2026 marks the event's 10th edition.

Fan Perspective

For visitors, the appeal is tasting the same ingredient across completely different dishes — bread, ramen, pizza, and sweets — all made from wheat that was harvested and milled just before the event.

What To Know

This isn't a generic food festival — the story is the seasonality and regional identity of Japanese wheat itself, celebrated through the foods made from it right after harvest.

Japan is often associated with rice, but wheat-based foods such as ramen, bread, and pizza have developed strong local craft cultures too, and shinmugi festivals put a spotlight on that side of Japanese food culture.
