Mainz won 4–3 on September 19. Kaishu Sano started for Mainz and assisted Eric Martel's 78th-minute goal. Gladbach defender Ko Itakura also started, while Daiki Hashioka entered in the second half.

Shuto Machino came on late for Gladbach and converted a penalty in stoppage time to make it 4–3. The result produced a rare Bundesliga match in which four Japanese players were directly involved across both teams.
