A record-breaking 30th edition
Tokyo Game Show 2026 opens September 17 at Makuhari Messe in Chiba, marking the show's 30th edition with its largest lineup ever: a record 1,138 exhibitors from 53 countries and regions, spread across roughly 3,999 booths — about 540 based in Japan and 598 from overseas.
Organizer CESA expects approximately 300,000 visitors across the show's now-record five-day run, extended this year from the usual four days.
What's actually open when
September 17-18 are business and press days, closed to general visitors. Public days run September 19 (Saturday) through 21 (Monday, a national holiday) — the days fans can buy tickets and attend.
Opening day also brings a dedicated Xbox broadcast at 7:00 PM JST on September 17, and the Japan Game Awards 2026 "Future Division" presentation ceremony is scheduled for September 20, spotlighting unreleased titles.
Where to go deeper
TBM has already covered TGS 2026's indie scene (SELECTED INDIE 80 and Sense of Wonder Night), the show's international-visitor "GO TO TGS" program, and specific booth confirmations including Persona 4 Revival's stage lineup — see the related coverage below for what's actually playable this year.
What To Know
A record-breaking exhibitor count and visitor estimate make this the biggest single week on the Japanese gaming calendar all year, and the show's public days give international and local fans alike a rare, direct look at upcoming games from major and indie studios in one place.
TGS remains distinct from Western shows like the old E3 in that its public days are genuinely open to general ticket-buying fans, not just industry and press — a key reason it draws such large public attendance figures.
