PlayStation steps away, Xbox steps in
Xbox and Kojima Productions announced on September 9-10, 2026 that Xbox will publish PHYSINT, expanding a relationship that already covers Kojima's other announced project, OD.
Kojima said Kojima Productions received unexpected notice from PlayStation Studios in mid-June 2026 that the original PHYSINT deal was being cancelled, and the studio then spent roughly three months looking for a new publisher.
What both sides are saying
Xbox CEO Asha Sharma said: "Creators have choices about where and how they bring their ideas to life. We're honored that Kojima-san has chosen XBOX to work with KOJIMA PRODUCTIONS on PHYSINT."
Kojima said the new deal "expands our relationship with XBOX beyond OD," adding that the studio "remain[s] committed to redefining the action-espionage genre" as development continues.
What's still unknown
Neither company gave a release window for PHYSINT, and the official statements only say they will "share more as development progresses." PHYSINT was first revealed at PlayStation's State of Play in January 2024 with PlayStation Studios as publisher — the game itself, not just its publisher, is affected by this switch.
What To Know
A major, already-revealed Kojima game losing its original platform-holder mid-development and resurfacing on a rival platform is rare — it's a real structural shake-up in how a AAA Japanese-developed game gets published, not routine marketing news.
Kojima Productions is one of the most closely watched independent Japanese studios internationally, and its publisher relationships are followed as closely as its games — this is the second high-profile platform-holder partnership (after Xbox's existing OD deal) the studio has struck outside a traditional single-console exclusive.
