A battle built around idol-produced stages
IDOL BATTLE ALIVE is built around more than simply performing songs. Participating idol groups are responsible for designing their own stage presentation, from the setlist and lighting to costumes, props and how the space itself is used.
The 2026 event will take place at Toyosu PIT on November 2, with a ¥5 million prize for the winning group.
Five judging criteria
The competition evaluates groups across five areas: stage direction, singing ability, performance, idol quality and expression.
Four groups that advance through the preliminary stage will compete in the final, making the event a test of both live performance and creative production.
The story starts before the live show
A pre-event program, "Documentary of IDOL BATTLE ALIVE 2026," will begin streaming on September 23. The series will follow the road toward the live competition and give viewers more context for how the groups prepare their performances.
What To Know
The format gives idol fans something different from a conventional multi-group live: the groups are judged not just as performers, but as creators of the entire stage experience.
Japan's idol live scene includes everything from small multi-act events to major arena shows. A competition that evaluates self-produced stage direction adds a production-focused angle to that culture.
