Swallowtail 4K Remaster Opens Today — Iwai Shunji's 1996 Classic Returns, Fully Supervised

Swallowtail (『スワロウテイル』), Shunji Iwai's 1996 film, returns to Japanese theaters today, September 4, 2026, as Swallowtail 4K Remaster — a 4K restoration with Dolby Atmos sound, fully supervised by Iwai himself.

The re-release lands roughly thirty years after the film's original release (September 14, 1996), and roughly a year after an earlier pass of the restoration screened at the 2025 Tokyo International Film Festival — today's version, according to reporting on the release, represents a further-refined restoration beyond that TIFF showing.

A Deliberately Difficult Restoration

Iwai has spoken about why this particular restoration wasn't straightforward: the film was shot on 16mm, with sections deliberately over- or under-developed for a specific visual effect — a technique that complicated the 4K remaster work. "It was shot on 16mm, and we'd also experimentally used push and pull processing, so the remastering work was genuinely difficult — but it came together in a way I'm satisfied with," Iwai said.

The Cast, Thirty Years Later

Hiroshi Mikami, Chara, and Ayumi Ito — who played Hio Feihong, Glico, and Ageha respectively in the original film — have each released comments tied to the release. Chara described the experience of returning to Glico after thirty years as a kind of metamorphosis: "like a butterfly, from caterpillar through cocoon to flight." Mikami said the 4K remaster let him see each character's story more clearly than before, and Ito called reuniting with Ageha after so long "moved by the overwhelming world Iwai created for theaters to experience."

At a pre-release talk event with music producer Takeshi Kobayashi, who composed the film's score, Iwai revisited a comment he made at the original 1996 completion screening: "Thirty years ago, at the completion premiere, I said, 'I did my best — I can't do any more than this.' I'll say that again now, with confidence."

What's Screening Alongside It

Two of Iwai's early short films, undo (1994) and PiCNiC (1996), are also receiving their own 4K remasters and will screen on September 25, 2026, with new poster visuals based on their original 1990s theatrical designs.
