Article

Shin-Ei Animation — the studio behind Doraemon, Crayon Shin-chan, and Ninja Hattori-kun — is marking its 50th anniversary with a dedicated exhibition at the Suginami Animation Museum, running July 25 through November 29, 2026.

Admission is free, and the exhibition is structured in two distinct periods with different featured works, so what's on display depends on when you visit.

Two Periods, Two Line-ups

The current period, running through October 4, centers on Ninja Hattori-kun, Kaibutsu-kun, and Crayon Shin-chan. A separate, time-limited section on the film "You, Fireworks, and a Promise" also ran within this period through August 30.

From October 6 through the exhibition's close on November 29, the display shifts to a second line-up centered on Doraemon, alongside Oishinbo and Obotchan-kun.

What's on Display

The exhibition includes original animation cels and production materials, plus a 3.6-meter timeline tracing Shin-Ei Animation's five decades through key visuals from across its history. Works from the studio's more recent output, including PUI PUI Molcar, are also featured alongside the classic-era material.

The venue — Tokyo Polytechnic University's Suginami Animation Museum, on the third floor of Suginami Kaikan — is open 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., with last admission at 5:30 p.m.

What To Know

Shin-Ei Animation is the studio behind Doraemon and Crayon Shin-chan — two of the longest-running, most culturally embedded anime franchises in Japan — and a free, dedicated 50th-anniversary retrospective with original production materials is a rare, low-barrier way to see that history up close.

The Suginami Animation Museum sits inside a residential part of Suginami Ward, an area with a long, low-profile history as an actual animation-industry production hub — a genuinely different kind of "anime tourism" than Akihabara or Ikebukuro's retail-driven districts.
