Tokyo's MOT Opens a Major Taiwan–Japan Modern Art Exhibition on September 5

The Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo (MOT) opens "Constellations of Simultaneity — A Cross-Border Artistic Gaze on Stars That Shared Time" (共時的星叢) on September 5, 2026, running through December 13 — a large-scale exhibition introducing modern Taiwanese art to Japan.

The show centers on artists tied to Fūsha Shisha, a Taiwanese modernist poetry group formed in the 1930s, using that history as an entry point into reexamining modern Taiwan and Japan side by side across a range of cultural and artistic forms.

What's on Display

The exhibition brings together approximately 200 modern Taiwanese artworks and around 500 archival materials, alongside roughly 100 Japanese works from the same period. Guest curator Huang Ya-Li leads the show, featuring work by artists central to modern Taiwanese art history, including sculptor Huang Tu-shui and painters Chen Cheng-po and Kuo Hsueh-hu.

An opening-day international symposium, bringing together researchers and specialists in Taiwanese art history, runs September 5 from 1:00 to 5:30 p.m.

Visiting Information

MOT is located in Kiba Park, Koto Ward (4-1-1 Miyoshi). Hours are 10:00 a.m.–6:00 p.m. (last entry 30 minutes before close), extending to 8:00 p.m. on Fridays in November. The museum is closed Mondays, with exceptions on September 21, October 12, and November 23, and additionally closed September 24, October 13, and November 24.

General admission is ¥2,000 (¥1,600 for groups); university/vocational students and visitors 65+ pay ¥1,400 (¥1,120 groups); junior/senior high school students pay ¥800 (¥640 groups); elementary-age visitors and younger enter free.
