SEKIRO: NO DEFEAT Anime Film Hits Theaters September 4 for a 3-Week Limited Run

劇場アニメ「SEKIRO: NO DEFEAT」9月4日公開、3週間限定上映

Article

One of FromSoftware's most acclaimed games is getting a genuine theatrical anime treatment — not a CG cutscene reel, but full hand-drawn 2D animation.

Release Details

SEKIRO: NO DEFEAT opens nationwide in Japan on September 4, 2026, for a 3-week limited theatrical run. It carries a PG12 rating.

Who's Behind It

Animation is produced by Qzil.la, directed by Kenichi Kusana, with a screenplay by Takuya Sato and character designs by Takahiro Kishida — based on FromSoftware's SEKIRO: SHADOWS DIE TWICE.

Voice Cast

Daisuke Namikawa voices the Wolf (the game's protagonist), Miyuki Sato voices Kuro, and Kenjiro Tsuda voices Genichiro Ashina, alongside Shizuka Ito as Emma and other confirmed cast members.

What To Know

SEKIRO: SHADOWS DIE TWICE is one of FromSoftware's most acclaimed and distinctive games — genuinely different from the Souls series it's often grouped with — so a full hand-drawn 2D theatrical anime adaptation, rather than a quick CG cutscene compilation, is a real statement of ambition that both game fans and anime fans have reason to pay attention to.

FromSoftware's games are already globally influential, but Japanese theatrical anime adaptations of Western-popular game franchises are still relatively uncommon and closely watched as a bellwether for whether other major Japanese game IP will get similar big-screen treatment.

What Fans Are Saying

  • "Full hand-drawn 2D for a FromSoft adaptation is more ambitious than I expected."
  • "3-week limited run means I need to plan this out."
  • "That voice cast is genuinely stacked."

Original Japanese
