Kingdom Hearts IV Gets a Late 2027 Release Window, a Coco World, and a New Disney+ Anime Series

It's been years since Kingdom Hearts III, and at D23 2026 fans finally got two big pieces of news at once: a real release window for Kingdom Hearts IV, and the surprise announcement of an original anime series.

Kingdom Hearts IV: Late 2027, a Coco World, and Quadratum

Kingdom Hearts IV launches in late 2027 on PS5, Xbox Series, Switch 2, and PC. A new trailer revealed that the world of Disney and Pixar's Coco will appear in the game, with Benjamin Bratt returning to voice Ernesto de la Cruz.

The story follows Sora, who awakens in a modern metropolis called Quadratum and has to find his way home, while Donald and Goofy travel to the Underworld looking for clues about where he's gone. Square Enix describes the battle system as fast-paced and combo-driven, with Keyblade transformation mechanics returning.

A Kingdom Hearts Anime Is Coming to Disney+

In a separate announcement at the same event, Disney confirmed an original Kingdom Hearts anime series (working title) is in development for Disney Channel and Disney+, made in partnership with Tetsuya Nomura and Square Enix's own creative team.

Disney Kids & Family president Ayo Davis said the series will tell a brand-new story that expands the Kingdom Hearts universe while remaining "unmistakably Kingdom Hearts." No release date, cast, or studio has been announced yet.

Kingdom Hearts III shipped back in January 2019, so a concrete release window — plus a completely new format (a Disney+ anime, not just another game) revealed on the very same day — is the kind of double announcement long-time fans have been waiting years for, not just an incremental update.

Kingdom Hearts is one of the rare true creative collaborations between a major Japanese studio and a major US media company, with Square Enix's Tetsuya Nomura directly involved in shaping both the game and the new anime rather than simply licensing the IP out — a genuinely unusual level of cross-company creative control.
