Formation and Early Years

L'Arc-en-Ciel formed in Osaka in February 1991, when bassist Tetsuya recruited vocalist Hyde, along with an early guitarist and drummer. Those two early members departed within a couple of years, replaced by guitarist Ken (1992) and drummer Sakura (1993).

The Stable Lineup

Sakura left the band in 1997 and was replaced by Yukihiro in 1998 — the lineup of Hyde (vocals/guitar), Tetsuya (bass), Ken (guitar), and Yukihiro (drums) has remained unchanged ever since, an unusually long run of stability for a rock band.
