Japanese Fan Culture Words You Should Know (Beyond Oshi and Gentei)

You already know 推し (oshi) and 限定 (gentei) — see TBM's Oshi Culture and Magical Mirai guides for those. This time, we're going further into the vocabulary fans actually use with each other.

布教 (fukyō) — Evangelizing

布教 literally means "missionary work" or "evangelizing," but in fan culture it means recommending something you love to someone else, trying to get them into it too. If a friend shows you three hours of clips trying to convert you into a fan, that's 布教.

供給 (kyōkyū) — Supply

供給 literally means "supply," and in fandom it refers to new content from your favorite artist, character, or group — a new photo, a livestream, a magazine feature. Fans often talk about being "starved" for 供給 during quiet periods, or thanking a busy release schedule for plenty of it.

ガチ勢 (gachi-zei) — Hardcore Fans

ガチ (gachi) means "serious" or "for real," and 勢 means roughly "faction" or "group" — together, ガチ勢 describes fans who take something seriously at a competitive or highly dedicated level, as opposed to casual fans.

履修 (rishū) — Catching Up

履修 originally means "completing a course" in an academic sense, but fans borrow it to mean catching up on a series or artist's back catalog — "履修しないと" ("I need to catch up") is common when someone realizes they've missed a lot.

What To Know

Once you know 推し and 限定, the next layer of fan vocabulary is where conversations actually get interesting — these are the words fans use with each other daily that rarely make it into beginner guides.

Japanese fan communities have developed a genuinely rich internal vocabulary, much of it originating online and spreading into everyday fan conversation — these words aren't formal Japanese, but you'll hear and see them constantly in fan spaces, from Twitter/X to convention lines.
