Hatsune Miku's culture didn't grow through official releases alone. A large part of it was built by fans and creators making their own music, art, and videos — and Piapro is the platform that made that possible.

What Is Piapro?

Piapro is a creator community site run by Crypton Future Media, the company behind Hatsune Miku — a "web portal that contains information about Hatsune Miku and all Piapro Characters." The name comes from a shortening of the Japanese pronunciation of "Peer Production." It's where fans and creators share original work — illustration, music, video, and 3DCG among them — based on Crypton's "Piapro Characters," a family that includes Hatsune Miku, Kagamine Rin and Len, Megurine Luka, KAITO, and MEIKO.

Making Derivative Creation Legally Safe

Piapro operates under an official license, the Piapro Character License (PCL), announced by Crypton in 2009 and "crafted with the clear aim of compatibility with Japanese law and Japanese pop culture." It spells out how fans can use the Piapro Characters in their own non-commercial work. That license is a big reason so much fan-made Miku content — songs, illustrations, videos — could spread freely without creators worrying about copyright trouble.

Not the Same as Vocaloid Software

Piapro isn't the singing-voice software itself — that's Vocaloid, the voice-synthesis technology Crypton's Miku voicebank is built on. Piapro is the community platform where the results of that creativity, and other Miku-related fan work, actually get shared.
