What Is MMD? How One Fan's 3D Animation Tool Became a Creative Movement, Explained by Marine

「MMD」とは?一人のアイデアから広がった3Dアニメーション文化をMarineが解説

Article

One creator wanted to see Hatsune Miku dance in 3D — the tool he built to do it became a movement of its own.

A Personal Project, Freely Shared

Yu Higuchi released MMD (MikuMikuDance) for free on February 24, 2008, originally just to animate Hatsune Miku in 3D as an alternative to still images common in Vocaloid videos at the time. Its open-source, flexible, easy-to-use design drove rapid adoption.

From One Video to a Movement

Within about five years, MMD became Japan's most widely used 3D animation software, with user-created videos on YouTube and Niconico surpassing 100,000. It spawned the biannual "MMD Cup" animation competition.

What To Know

MMD being created by one person purely to solve his own personal problem, then becoming the dominant tool for an entire creative ecosystem within about five years, is a striking example of grassroots software reshaping a creative medium.

MMD becoming a legitimate path to recognition for 3D model creators, on par with fan artists and musicians, reflects Vocaloid culture's broader tendency to treat many creative disciplines as equally valid, interconnected parts of the same fan ecosystem.
