Studio Nue launched Macross with "The Super Dimension Fortress Macross" in 1982. Set aboard a giant starship-city defending Earth from a hostile alien species, the series introduced the "Valkyrie," a fighter jet capable of transforming into a humanoid robot, alongside a recurring plot device where a pop idol's song ultimately proves more powerful than weapons in resolving the conflict. This blend of mecha action and in-universe pop idol culture became the franchise's defining signature.

The Franchise Today

Macross has continued through numerous sequel series (Macross 7, Macross Frontier, Macross Delta, among others). A new anime project was announced in June 2023, and in 2024 the franchise confirmed all 18 existing Macross titles would stream worldwide on Disney+ under an expanded global rights agreement between Big West, Studio Nue, and Harmony Gold USA. The most recent theatrical release, "Macross Delta: Zettai LIVE!!!!!!," came out in October 2021.
