What Is Fullmetal Alchemist? The Completed Series Still Celebrated 25 Years Later, Explained by Marine
「鋼の錬金術師」とは?荒川弘が描いた完結型シリーズの名作をMarineが解説
Article
Twenty-five years after it began, Fullmetal Alchemist remains a benchmark for how a long fantasy manga can actually stick its ending.
A Story Built to Finish
Hiromu Arakawa began serializing Fullmetal Alchemist in Monthly Shonen Gangan in 2001. It follows brothers Edward and Alphonse Elric, who lose their bodies attempting forbidden alchemy to revive their mother, as they search for a way to restore themselves. The manga concluded in 2010, with virtually all of its early foreshadowing deliberately paying off by the finale — a structural achievement fans and critics still point to as unusually complete for the genre.
25 Years Later
2026 marks the 25th anniversary of the manga's serialization. To celebrate, an original-artwork exhibition by Arakawa is running at Matsuya Ginza in Tokyo from August 13 to September 2, 2026. Arakawa herself has moved on to new work: her latest series, "Daemons of the Shadow Realm," began its own anime adaptation in April 2026.
What To Know
Fullmetal Alchemist is frequently held up by fans as a rare example of a long-running manga that stuck the landing, its ending resolves essentially every major thread set up from the first chapters, which is part of why it's so often recommended as an entry point for people skeptical about starting long anime series that might never properly conclude.
Fullmetal Alchemist's alchemy system, built around the strict principle of "equivalent exchange" (nothing can be created without an equal sacrifice), reflects a broader tendency in well-regarded Japanese fantasy fiction to ground magic systems in consistent internal rules rather than open-ended power, similar in spirit to Hunter x Hunter's Nen system.
